The cytoskeletal (albuminoid) proteins of the lens - including the intermediate filament proteins filensin and phakinin - are insoluble in water but can be solubilised in urea, and their proportion rises with age and with cataract formation. The crystallins (alpha, beta and gamma) are the water-soluble structural proteins, alpha-crystallin additionally acting as a molecular chaperone.
