MDM2 amplification (with CDK4, on the 12q ring and giant marker chromosomes) is characteristic of WELL-DIFFERENTIATED LIPOSARCOMA (atypical lipomatous tumour) and its dedifferentiated form, and MDM2 FISH is the diagnostic test distinguishing it from a lipoma. Myxoid liposarcoma carries DDIT3 (FUS-DDIT3) fusion, pleomorphic liposarcoma complex karyotypes, and lipomatosis is non-neoplastic.
