For the etonogestrel implant (progestin-only), the absolute contraindication (US MEC category 4) is current breast cancer. Per the key, severe liver disease (decompensated cirrhosis, hepatocellular adenoma or carcinoma) is the contraindication listed; in current MEC it is category 3. Smoking, prosthetic valves and cardiovascular disease are not contraindications for progestin-only methods.
