Staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome produces a DIFFUSE MACULAR ERYTHRODERMA ('sunburn-like' rash) with mucosal hyperaemia and a strawberry tongue. HYPOTENSION is required for the diagnosis and is therefore present in all cases (not 50%), RENAL impairment is COMMON (one of the multisystem criteria, with hepatic, haematological, muscular, gastrointestinal and CNS involvement), and the DESQUAMATION of the palms and soles appears LATE - 1-2 WEEKS after onset; treatment is source removal, fluids, antistaphylococcal antibiotics with clindamycin and IVIG in severe cases.
