BENIGN SYMMETRIC LIPOMATOSIS (Madelung disease, Launois-Bensaude) is strongly associated with chronic ALCOHOLISM (and with the macrocytosis, liver disease, neuropathy and hyperlipidaemia that accompany it), presenting as symmetrical non-encapsulated fat deposition around the neck, shoulders and upper trunk, sometimes compressing the airway. Treatment is abstinence with surgical debulking or liposuction; thyroid disease, diabetes and Down syndrome are not the recognised associations.
